Camp San Luis Obispo
Training Day – Day #3, Tuesday, 25 June 2019

 

Highlights from day three.

Medic Unit: The cadets were introduced to the different types of medical emergencies; specifically altered levels of consciousness, shortness of breath, and chest pain, and how to treat and recognize certain emergencies.

Law Enforcement Unit: Covered high risk/felony stops, role playing scenarios determining what crimes (if any) where committed (crimes against people-property-public peace). They had an in-depth class on forensics by OIS Agent and a class on reports taken at crime scenes.

Drill Instructor Unit: Cadets worked on individual, squad and platoon training and hands on instruction by the Senior Cadet Drill Instructors.

Cyber Unit: The day started out having the Cadets piece together all the equipment needed to run a business size network inside of a rack that would reside in a company. Then Cadets worked on disassembling a computer and reconfiguring boot up settings. Finally, they were shown how to connect computers to a network and use commands to test the connections to other computers on the network

Marksmanship Unit: Today the unit spent the day at the indoor range firing the air rifles for familiarization and qualification. Tomorrow the unit will move to the outdoor range and fire with .22 caliber rifles.

Public Safety Unit: Cadets toured an ambulance from the San Luis Ambulance, Inc. and were able to speak with the paramedics and learn about what they do on a daily basis. Cadets also received instruction on how to properly conduct search and rescue inside buildings.

Field Skills Unit: Learned the importance of nutrition in the field and how to use and be safe with knives in field environments. Cadets were given an assortment of ingredients and were tasked with cooking and eating their own meal for dinner

Survival Unit: Is out on survival.

Public Affairs Unit: Today the unit worked on independent photo and video projects and utilizing apps and techniques to render better promotional products for California Cadet Corps

Summer Encampment - Advanced
Camp San Luis Obispo
Training Day – Day #2, Monday, 23 June 2019.

Highlights form day two.

Medic Unit: Completed CPR training with 100% pass rate on skills practicum.

Law Enforcement Unit: LEU Covered types of law used in the US, centered on statutory law, discussed the penal code; crimes against people, property, public peace and so forth. Also covered how to conduct field and well as how to conduct searches. K9 Unit from San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office came out and demonstrated a structure search with a K9.

Drill Instructor Unit: Covered how to properly give commands, manual of guidon, as well as proper individual and squad drill.

Cyber Unit: Discussed how networks are connected together in various ways and did hands on training in creating patch cords, cable terminations into patch panels and modular jacks, also testing of both copper and fiber optic cables and cleaning methods of fiber terminations

Marksmanship Unit: Marksmanship received instructions on Rifle safety, weapons handling, shooting position, snapping in, and weapons safety test.

Public Safety Unit: Received instruction on first aid, introduction to the classifications of fires, as well as instruction on the types of gear that fire fighters wear and use.

Field Skills Unit: Packed up and headed out to their Bivouac area and received instruction on basic first aid as well as how to prevent heat casualties.

Survival Unit: Is out on survival.

Public Affairs Unit: Received hands on training with all of the equipment that is necessary for the course. Hands on training included iPads, their camera phones, Canon rebel cameras and conducted their first interviews.

Summer Encampment - Advanced
Training Day #1, Sunday, 23 June 2019
Camp San Luis Obispo, CA
 

Today began the first day of Advanced Summer Encampment. Cadets spent the morning tearing down their tents and equipment at Camp Brown (Bivouac site) and moved back to the main area of Camp San Luis Obispo into the barracks. Cadets went through in-processing (received their unit assignments and unit baseball caps) and received Command Briefing regarding expectations for Advanced Encampment. After the briefing, Cadets were released back to their units and began setting up their bunks. Cadets enjoyed a delicious dinner followed by returning to their units for Cadre introductions and course objectives and expectations.

Advanced Encampment consist of the following units: Survival Unit, Drill Instructor Unit, Law Enforcement Unit, Medic Unit, Cyber Unit, Marksmanship Unit, Public Safety Unit, Field Skills Unit. and Public Affairs Unit.

Tomorrow, Monday, 24 June 2019, will be the first full day of training.

Leadership Summer Encampment - Daily Update

Camp San Luis Obispo
Final Training Day – Day #6, Saturday, 22 June 2019.

 

 

Congratulations to all Cadets on their successful Graduation this morning concluding the 2019 Leadership Summer Encampment. After the Graduation Ceremony concluded, Cadets and Parents enjoyed a delicious BBQ.

Whether a member of the BST Unit, NCO Academy, OCS, or Leadership, they faced challenges throughout the week and overcame them. Congratulations to the OCS Unit for being selected as the Leadership Encampment Honor Unit! This evening concluded with dinner, a field chapel service, and continuing clean up and tear down of the Bivouac site.

Tomorrow begins Advanced Summer Encampment, which will include the following units: Survival, Law Enforcement, Medic, Cyber, Drill Instructor, Marksmanship, Field Skills, Public Safety, and Public Affairs.

Highlights from today’s Graduation Ceremony included the following:

Cadet Col. Friedle (10th Corps Commander), Cadet Command Sgt. Maj. Thorpe (10th Corps Command Sgt. Maj.), and Cadet Maj. Galdamez (10th Corps Deputy Commander) were awarded the Cadet Service Medal for their meritorious service to the California Cadet Corps.

Change of Command for outgoing 10th Corps Commander, Cadet Col Fridle, and incoming 10th Corps Commander, Cadet Maj. Galdamez.

BST Unit had 5 promotions to the rank of Cadet, 30 promotions to the rank of Cadet First Class, 91 promotions to the rank of Cadet Corporal, and 5 promotions to the rank of Cadet Sgt.

NCO Academy had 4 promotions to Cadet Cpl., 53 promotions to the rank of Cadet Sgt., 21 promotions to the rank of Cadet Staff Sgt., 8 promotions to the rank of Cadet Sgt. 1st Class, and 2 promotions to the rank of Cadet Master Sgt.

OCS had 32 Cadets commissioned to the rank of Cadet 2nd Lt. and 2 commissioned to the rank of Cadet 1st Lt.

The Leadership Encampment would have not been possible without the incredible support of the California National Guard, California State Military Reserve (CA State Guard), Camp San Luis Obispo, 40th Infantry Division, Headquarters California Cadet Corps Staff & Full-time personnel, and the Unit staff of each Leadership Encampment Unit.

Summer Encampment - Leadership
Training Day #5, Thursday, 20 June 2019
Camp San Luis Obispo, CA

 

 

Day 5 was another fantastic day for Leadership Encampment with superb training. BST Unit spent the day at the Leadership Reaction Course (LRC) and working on Drill & Ceremonies in preparation for tomorrow’s Drill Competition. NCO Unit spent the day preparing for promotion boards and perfecting their Drill & Ceremonies at the squad and platoon level. OCS was out on the Land Navigation Course putting into action the use of maps and compasses to navigate on the Land Navigation Course. This evening NCO and OCS held a Joint Dinning-In at the Officer’s Club here at Camp San Luis Obispo. Tomorrow will be the last full day of training for Leadership Encampment.

Summer Encampment - Leadership
Training Day #4, Wednesday, 19 June 2019
Camp San Luis Obispo, CA

Day 4 was a great day of excitement and fun for the Cadets. The morning started with Chapel Service, which nearly 115 Cadets attended. OCS Unit spent the day perfecting their knowledge and skillset for upcoming promotion Performance Task Assessment and Promotion Board. The BST Unit and NCO Unit spent the day at the Gladiator Paintball Park (located next door to Camp San Luis Obispo), playing capture the flag. It was great seeing Cadets out there on the paintball field working on teamwork, discipline, courage and leadership, and most importantly having a safe and fun time with great comradery amongst each other and their Units.

Summer Encampment - Leadership
Training Day #3, Tuesday, 18 June 2019
Camp San Luis Obispo, CA
Today was another great day of training for the Cadets! You be may be wondering what the different color ball caps represent: Baby blue ball caps are for the BST (Bear, Sword, Torch) Unit, yellow ball caps are for the NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) Unit, dark blue is OCS (Officer Candidate School (OCS), and black ball caps/berets are Leadership.
The BST Unit spent the morning and early afternoon at the Obstacle Course. The Cadets truly had a good time and enjoyed the camaraderie. The late afternoon was spent working on Drill and Ceremonies as well as learning required knowledge from the Cadet Handbook.
NCO Academy spent the morning learning about proper uniform wear and appearance, and different type of Cadet uniforms, as well as instruction on Organizational Culture and the 4 Leadership Indicators. The afternoon was spent at the Obstacle Course.
OCS Unit was at the Leadership Reaction Course (LRC) this morning. The LRC is a group of mini challenges and obstacles that are carried out as a squad. The LRC helps Cadets in decision making, adaptability, confidence, and ability to convey orders quickly. In the afternoon OCS conducted classes on professional ethics as well as compass/map reading refresher class.
There are 400 Cadets attending Leadership Encampment! Tomorrow will be another great day of leadership training for the Cadets.

Summer Encampment - Leadership
Training Day #2, Monday, 17 June 2019
Camp San Luis Obispo, CA
Today was the first full day of training. The BST Unit worked on the basics of drill this morning, followed by games of kickball and capture the flag this afternoon, as well as reviewing required knowledge from the Cadet Handbook.
NCO Academy spent the day working on Drill and Ceremonies to include Individual, Squad, and Platoon Drill, as well as how to conduct Platoon level in-ranks inspections.
OCS Unit worked on how to successfully plan an Operations Order, followed by lessons on the principles of officership, leadership counseling roles, safety and risk management, followed by spending the afternoon at the Obstacle Course.
There are 400 Cadets attending Leadership Encampment! The weather has been absolutely beautiful with today’s high being 70 degrees.

Day #1 - 16 June 2019
The Cadets arrived earlier today, went through in-processing (received their unit assignments, hydration packs, PT gear, sleeping bags, and unit baseball caps) and formed into their units and met their unit leadership that will guide, train, and mentor them for the duration of Leadership Encampment. After enjoying a delicious dinner at the Dinning Facility, Cadets marched to the Perlee Theater for Command Briefing regarding expectations for Leadership Encampment. After the briefing, Cadets were released back to their units and marched back to the Camp Brown (bivouac location) for end of day preparations and are now sleeping so they can be prepared for the first full day of training tomorrow.
