Lifeguard Unit
Overview
The Lifeguard Unit (LGU), an intensive and dynamic program designed for cadets 15 years or older seeking to develop essential lifesaving skills in aquatic environments. This course is tailored to instill discipline, teamwork, and a strong sense of responsibility while equipping cadets with the knowledge and abilities required to ensure the safety of their fellow cadets and community members in aquatic environments. The course includes multiple physically demanding waterborne challenges to test cadets' endurance, strength, and mental resilience.
Prerequisites Online/ Prior to Encampment
i. Enroll and participate in LGU Google Classroom
ii. Complete reading Pre-Study Material
iii. Complete accurate note taking bring it with you to camp
At Encampment
i. Swim Test: Pass the following swim test on the first day of LGU beginning at Advanced encampment. It is a pass/fail, you must pass all three segments, or you fail the swim test. The test encompasses the following:
1. 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl/freestyle or breaststroke
2. 2-minute tread using legs only
3. Retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds
At Encampment cont.
ii. Class Lecture and Class Activity work
1. Cadets will actively participate and as questions on lecture material as needed
2. Cadets will take notes and study notes, book work activities and mnemonics
iii. Skill Simulations
1. Cadets will actively participate and repeat skill simulation steps to better retain all expected information in order to pass the written and practicums.
iv. Written and Practical Tests
1. Written tests: Cadets are only allowed two attempts as passing the written exams
2. Practical Skill Sheet Tests: Cadets are encouraged to do their best on their practical tests. Re-tests are not always permitted due to time constraints.
